Hair Removal: What is IPL?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a method that can achieve permanent hair reduction. Any areas can be treated except those next to your eye. Many people use these treatments to remove hair from their upper lip, chin, bikini line, neck, chest, back, stomach, legs, under arms and arms.

We understand that this type of treatment may be new to you and we want to make your experience as comfortable and rewarding as possible. Your skin care specialist will perform the treatment by focusing the beam from the laser or IPL device onto an area of your skin. The hair follicle absorbs the light and heats up, destroying the hair and preventing re-growth. Following IPL hair removal, you may be given an ice pack to reduce redness and swelling, and you'll need to avoid direct sunlight on the treated area for a while.

Due to new advancements the newest IPL lasers are far more superior and virtually pain free compared to lasers of only a few years ago. The effectiveness of IPL hair removal treatment depends partly on your colouring, with the best results occurring in people with dark hair and light skin. There must be a concentration of colour in the hair to absorb the laser light. The treatment does not work on grey or blond hair. IPL is suitable for a wider range of skin and hair colours. Some medications can cause photosensitivity of the skin, which include some antibiotics, blood pressure / heart tablets. These medications do not exclude patients from treatments but a full list of medication should be asked for and disclosed by the patient to the treating clinician. Test shots are always advisable in order to gauge individual skin reaction. An individual treatment of IPL therapy will thin out the hair, so for best results you will need a series of treatments.
